A garage floor takes a beating. It holds a heavy truck, a rolling toolbox, spilled oil and wet tires. A floor that cracks, flakes or holds puddles makes every day harder. A floor poured the right way is flat, tough and easy to clean.

Waco Concrete handles garage floor concrete in Waco TX for new garages, replacements and repairs. We are locally owned, we have 8 years in business and we give a free written estimate before we begin.

What a good garage floor needs

A garage floor needs a firm base, a vapor barrier, steel and the right thickness. Most are four to five inches thick. A heavy vehicle or a workshop may need six inches. The floor also needs a slope toward the door so water leaves instead of pooling.

We pay close attention to the edge near the garage door. That is where most cracks and breaks start.

  • A compacted base and a vapor barrier
  • Steel rebar or wire mesh on supports
  • A gentle slope toward the door
  • A hard troweled or broom finish

Finishes for garage floor concrete

A hard trowel finish is smooth, dense and easy to clean. It can get slippery when wet, so some owners prefer a light broom finish. Color, a sealer or an epoxy style coating adds beauty and helps against stains.

We can also add control joints in a neat grid and saw cut them at the right time. See concrete staining and sealing and concrete resurfacing for ideas.

Replacing or repairing a garage floor

Old garage floors can crack, sink or flake. A repair may be enough if the slab is solid. See concrete repair and concrete leveling. If the floor is broken or has a bad base, we remove it and pour new concrete.

Tearing out a garage floor needs planning. We move the work around your car, your tools and your storage, and we keep the dust down.

Garage floor cost, timing and next steps

Price depends on the size, the thickness, tear out and finish. A two car garage often takes two or three days, plus time to cure. We give you a written price and a plan for where to park.

Garage Floor Concrete questions answered

How thick should a garage floor be?

Most garage floors are poured four inches thick. If you park a heavy truck or a large SUV, or you plan a workshop with heavy tools, five or six inches is a smarter choice. The edges and the area near the door are often thickened because they carry extra load.

Thickness works together with the base and the steel. A thin floor on soft clay will crack no matter what. We look at how you use the garage and what the soil is like, then recommend a thickness and tell you why. You get the number in writing, so you can compare any bid fairly.

Ask for the thickness in writing. Our garage floor concrete estimates list the inches, the steel and the base work. Tell us the make and size of your vehicles and any lift or workbench plan, so we can match the thickness and the steel to the real loads.

Why does my garage floor have cracks?

Almost every garage floor has some cracks. Concrete shrinks as it dries. Clay soil in Waco moves with the weather. The floor may also have been poured thin, or without steel, or on soft ground. Heavy loads near the door add stress.

Small cracks that do not move are mostly a cosmetic issue. Wide cracks, cracks with a height difference and cracks that grow may point to a bigger problem. We look at the pattern, check the base and drainage and tell you what we think. See concrete repair for how we fix them, and foundation repair if the cracks travel into the walls.

A quick photo of the cracks helps us tell you what garage floor concrete repair may cost before we visit. A level floor with a gentle slope to the door is the goal, and we check the slope with a laser before and during the pour.

Can you pour a new garage floor over my old one?

Sometimes. If the old floor is solid, level and only worn on the surface, a thin overlay can renew it. See concrete resurfacing. A thicker pour over old concrete, called a bonded topping, can work in some cases, but it raises the floor height, and that can cause trouble at the door and the walls.

If the old floor is cracked, sunken or crumbling, we recommend removing it and pouring a new floor on a good base. That is the best way to get a long lasting result. We look at the floor, explain what is possible and give you written prices for each option.

We plan garage floor concrete jobs around your day, so you know where to park and when the floor will be ready. If your garage door is new, we can plan the slab edge so the seal sits tight and keeps out water and dust.

How long before I can park in my garage after the pour?

You can usually walk on the new floor after a day or two. Wait about seven days before you park a car on it, and about 28 days before you park a heavy truck or roll heavy equipment across it. The concrete keeps getting stronger for weeks.

We tell you the exact day, and we help you plan where to park. During the first week, keep the floor clean and avoid dragging heavy items. Do not put sealers or coatings on right away. Most need the concrete to cure for at least 28 days. We leave care notes, and we are happy to answer questions as the floor cures.

Waiting for the full cure gives garage floor concrete the best chance to last, so be patient with heavy loads. Please clear the garage of tools, boxes and cars before work starts, and we will help plan where to store things for a few days.

Should I seal or coat my garage floor?

A sealer is a smart, low cost step. It keeps oil, grease and water from soaking into the concrete and makes cleanup easier. A penetrating sealer is invisible and lets the concrete breathe. A film forming sealer gives a glossy look but may need reapplying and can be slippery.

If you want color or a very tough surface, you can look at coatings. These need careful prep, and a dry floor. We can advise you on products and help with the sealing, once your new concrete has cured. See concrete staining and sealing. A good sealer can double the life of a garage floor.

Good sealing protects garage floor concrete in Waco TX from oil, tire marks and the occasional spill. A neat control joint pattern helps the slab crack in straight lines, and we saw cut the joints at the right time after the pour.

Can garage floor concrete handle a heavy truck or a lift?

Yes, if it is built for it. A floor for a lift, a heavy truck or a workshop needs more thickness, more steel and a firm, well compacted base. Lifts often need specific slab thickness and strength from the maker, which we follow. Edges and thickened areas may be added where loads are high.

Tell us what you plan to put on the floor. We will ask for the weight and the footprint, then plan the slab. It is much cheaper to build it right the first time than to fix a cracked floor under a lift. See shop and barn concrete floors for larger buildings and heavier use.

Heavy use takes planning, so we design garage floor concrete for the weight of your truck, lift or tools. If you want a coating later, mention it now, because the finish we use on the slab should match the product you plan to apply.
